It ended, more-or-less, with the barn owl. Just before 10pm, our majestic neighbour appeared above the adjacent field. L spotted it first, and it took me a few moments to see it too. It swooped across the edge and then turned inwards towards us but veered off to the side too soon and was gone. It was a crowning moment to the day, which had seen the resumption of our weekly Friday swim – this time in the sea at Polkern’s beach.
